Our Approach to Ear Practice

JumbiPureMeldy is an independent resource for people who want to listen more closely — whether they are picking up music for the first time or returning after a long break.

What we believe

  1. Contrast before labels. You can hear that two things differ long before you know what they are called. We build on that.
  2. Short, repeatable sessions. Ears tire. Ten calm minutes, repeated, beat an hour of strain.
  3. Comfortable volume, always. Every exercise reminds you to keep sound at conversation level.
  4. No surprises. We never play audio automatically, and our waveforms and diagrams are illustrations, not controls.
  5. Unfamiliar is not wrong. When something sounds strange, you are noticing a real difference.

How the material is organised

Everything sits under four listening focuses: melody, pitch distance, timing and timbre. Each page explains its terms in plain language, offers ordered prompts you can follow without a teacher, and points to well-known recordings you can find in any library or streaming service.

Where our ideas come from

Our exercises draw on long-established teaching traditions, including Kodály's sung sol-fa, Curwen's hand signs and Dalcroze's movement-based eurhythmics, alongside the aural sections of graded music exams. We reference these openly and are not affiliated with any exam board, method organisation or publisher.

Accessibility

Every diagram has a written equivalent, colours meet strong contrast standards and the site works with keyboard and screen readers. If something is hard to use, please tell us.
